Fantasy Maps

blue, color, computer graphics, cute, girl, graphic, headphones, illustration, ilustracion, music, photography, visual  Hello all! 😀

Today I want to share something awesome with you – a great Cartographer for fantasy maps! 😀

I’ve been considering getting a map commissioned for a very long time. I figured if I was going to make up this fantasy world, I want it to be as immersive as possible. And, for me at least, I always love having fantasy maps to look at when I’m reading about new and exciting worlds. 🙂

I was lucky to quickly find the Cartographer’s Guild – on online forum for cartographers, many of whom are available for hire, and post portfolios and references for you to check out. It’s really easy to sign up, and post on their request page. The cartographers I talked to were all professional, and very talented.

I found an amazing artist on the Cartographer’s Guild Website. Her name is Cornelia Yoder, aka Chick, and she did a really amazing job! 😀

<– Why, yes. That *is* a samurai chick. Why? Because she’s amazing! 😀

I gave her this blurry, scribbly image to work with:

And she made a professional version out of it, about a billion times better. XD

She kept in contact throughout the whole process, asking questions and sending several drafts over for me to check. She was patient with my ramblings as I tried to figure out what all I wanted on there, lol, and made suggestions to make the map better.

You can find her General Info here: About Cornelia

And you can find her Map Commission Portfolio here: Cornelia’s Commission Portfolio

I won’t be posting the map here yet – not until I get some more things finalized with the self-publishing. But Cornelia may add it to her Guild Portfolio, and if you just so happen to wander over, you may just get a sneak peek if she does. ;D You should totally check her out regardless though – have I mentioned that?

Next up: A short reminder of where we left off on Ascension (because it’s been roughly 1,000 years), and then a chapter. Finally. I know. Writing type things on this writing type blog thinger. XD

Lol, until next time, Take Care, and Happy Writing! 😀

Looks like she does nice work. Just out of curiosity, what are the rates?

It was unclear to me if they do it for fun or for profit or both.

    . . . wait . . . 1,000 years? . . . I lost a few centuries here and there.

Seriously, good luck getting back to it.

I think they do a little of both. Some just like to practice, but others charge for the work and transfer of copyright. The rates all depend on the cartographer and how many details they’ll be adding. What fonts you want (and if the cartographer has to buy a new one for you), what kinds of details you want on the map (hand drawn or stamped on from a pre-made set), if you want special details (little castles for city markers instead of dots, and scrolly-thingies along the sides), color or black and white or greyscale, and what kind of copyright you want (full copyright, reproduction rights, etc).

The quotes I got from different cartographers were between $100 and $300, so there seems to be a big range. Talking with different people on the forums and through e-mail helps a lot in finding the right one, and looking at their references and past commissions too.

Cornelia made me a greyscale map for e-readers, 9 cities in total, with lakes, a desert, seas, mountains, forests, and two special areas that needed little pictures. She gave me full copyright, but retained the right to display the map in her portfolio. Her rate was $125.

Lol, and thank you – it’s honestly felt like 1,000 years since I could get on here and dedicate time just to writing. I’m so happy to be getting started again! 😀 And I’m super excited about all the things I have planned for this year. Lol – *tons* of stuff to make up for the not much stuff before. XD

  2. My brother loves to make maps. He needs to get into this!

That’s so cool – I wish I could draw something like that. And absolutely – I think it’s free to sign up and participate. They all seem to share critiques and help each other out on the forums too. 🙂

Being a moderator at The Guild, I gotta agree 🙂 ’tis a freindly place for anyone at all interested in Learning about mapping, from beginner to pro. You would be quite suprised to find out who hangs out there from time to time, just to show what they are working on and give pointers to those who ask.

Ok, enough of the soft sell…In answer to those asking about prices, it realy dépends on the artist, the complexity of the map, and how the negotiations go. By posting in the requerst forum, you could get all ranges of experience and abilities, but most requests get some responce. Once they come in, please make sure that once you settle on an artist, that they are capable of doing a style that you are looking for. Actually that should be part of the process of chosing an artist. Like Paige said, The Guild ranges from the rank beginner, to the seasoned pro, and most of us do do it just for the fun or games and not everyone at the guild do commissions. Those that do answer the requests are willing, some quite able, to give all kinds of maps a try.

One last point, I strongly suggest that anyone thinking of a map, at least TRY to draw one. If not as a finished product at least as a guide to who ever you get to make one. And who knows…you may like it so much more than you thought 😉
